How To Teach Speaking (Games For Children In The Classroom)

HOW TO TEACH SPEAKING


What is speaking ?
  • Speaking is "the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts". (Chaney, 1998,p.13)
  • Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing and receiving and processing information. (Brown, 1994; Burns & Joyce, 1997)
What is teaching speaking?

Teaching speaking is sometimes considered as a simple process commercial language school around the world hire people with no training to teach conversation.

Principles of teaching speaking :

  • Be aware of the differences between second language and foreign language learning contexts.
  • Give students practice with both fluency and accuracy.
  • Provide opportunities for students to talk by using group work or pair work, and limiting teacher talk.
  • Plan speaking tasks that involve negotiation for meaning.
  • Design classroom activities that involves guidance and practice in both transactional and interactional speaking.

  •  Game Type    : Guessing game
  • Aim        :
  1. Language    :  Asking and answering questions.
  2. Other    :  Recognition.
  •  Age        : 8+
  • Group Size    : 6-12
  • Time    : 15-20 minutes
  • Materials    :
  1.  A blindfold
  2. Scoreboard
  •  Description    :
        A "blind date" is a meeting between two people who have never seen each other before. This game makes us use a blindfolds to create a similar situation, although children in any class will of course know each other. The object of the game is to guess the name of another child, by asking questions, listening carefully to the answers, and recognizing the voice. 
  • Procedure    :
1.    A student sit in a chair in front of the room. Blindfold the student.
    Choose another child to be the “blind date”. He or she stands next to the blindfolded student at a distance of about two metres.

2.     During the game, another student next to blindfolded must be silent!
    The blindfolded asks the audience in the class, for example :
    “How old is she?”
    “Has she /  he got a brother?”
    “Has she / he got brown hair?”
    “Can she / he swim?”
    “Does she / he like apples?”

3.    The blinfolded student should asks about the characteristics of the another student next to he/she.
    *Don't ask the name of the student.

4.    If he/she collects enough datas about the another student. Finally, she / he must guess the student's name in the end of the game.
    Once the blindfolded student knows who the “blind date” is, he or she asks :

    “Is her / his name  . . . . . . . . . . ?”

5.    If the guess is correct, the student gets five stars. The game continues and another student next to the first blindfolded to play the role of “blind date” once again.

•    Group Size    : 6-12

•    Time    : 20-30 minutes

•    Materials    :

•    Description :

        Hot air balloon game is role-play game played by all of students in the class. Student make a similar situation and each student should describe their own or others’ characteristics.

•    Procedure :

1.    Every student get a card which is written a name of an animal. Tell them, they will take hot air balloon to move to another jungle because their city was burnt. But the balloon is overload. So some of students should go down of the balloon.

2.     Student will divided into some small groups to discuss which one of their group who should be out. And each student should give reason why they have to stay.

3.     Each group will present the result of their discussion.

4.    Finally, all of the student decided who will out.
